Four dead, several injured in separate Ohio Turnpike crashes
Three deadly crashes took place on the Ohio Turnpike Thursday morning, shutting down part of the tollway.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the accidents involved several trucks and passenger vehicles along the western portion of the turnpike.
The first crash occurred just after 5:30 a.m. eastbound in Swanton Township, Lucas County. A commercial vehicle and a passenger vehicle were involved in the crash that killed two people and injured three others.
The commercial vehicle was reported to have been hauling sulfuric acid. The Toledo Fire Department has established a 150’ perimeter around the scene as a precaution.
Just minutes later about a mile away from the first accident, four commercial vehicles and a passenger were involved in a crash that killed one person and injured three others.
The third crash involving three commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles occurred just before 6:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes about a mile from the first crash. One person died and several people were injured.
The Ohio Turnpike was closed for several hours in both directions between State Route 108 and State Route 2. A detour was established by the Ohio Turnpike Infrastructure Commission.
At least one eastbound and one westbound lane of travel on the Turnpike have now been opened.
These crashes still remain under further investigation.
