Another special meeting scheduled to discuss alternatives to demolishing Leavittsburg Dam

WARREN TWP., Ohio - A Tuesday afternoon meeting with Warren Township Trustees, Trumbull County Commissioners and members of the Trumbull County Metroparks Board led to the scheduling of another meeting on potential alternatives to the removal of the Leavittsburg Dam.
The dam is scheduled for complete removal in 2025. However, Warren Township Trustee Chair Ed Anthony told 21 News he has concerns with the complete removal of the dam.
These concerns include erosion and damage to nearby property, as well as concerns of potential exposure of hazardous material and wildlife concerns.
However, the Metroparks says the removal of the dam is necessary because it poses a drowning hazard and is bad for the environment.
Commissioner Denny Malloy discussed the potential solution of giving the dam to Warren Township and put the liability on them saying there is no reason for the park to own a dam.
Malloy added that more people are arguing to keep the dam rather than have it removed.
"We don't see a room full of people saying remove the dam. We see a room full of people saying keep the dam. So I think we should listen to that as civil servants," Malloy said.
The Metroparks will hold a follow-up meeting with all five of its board members to discuss those alternatives. From there they will decide on whether or not to meet with the EPA to see if those alternatives will be covered under its grant funding for the project.
