2000: A state performance audit of the Youngstown Water Department says the department faces many challenges and that "all options should be considered, including privatization."
Boxer Earnie Shavers will return to Trumbull County to be honored as "Puncher of the Century" at the Packard Music Hall, where he fought professionally four times.
The Columbiana County Board of Health and the Ohio Health Department have agreed to continue rabies prevention programs.
1985: Gov. Richard Celeste has ordered a freeze on new Medicaid beds in the state's nursing homes. About 60 percent of these beds are filled by Medicaid patients. The administration wants to develop stay-at-home care alternatives.
Local proponents of a Saturn car plant in the Mahoning Valley submitted five potential sites to General Motors. All meet the 600- to 1,000-acre requirement, although one is on GM-owned land in Lordstown. The company has said it doesn't want to locate Saturn near an existing GM facility.
The United States had a record trade deficit of $123 billion in 1984 as a flood of imports swamped a modest increase in exports.
1975: The Youngstown City Council urges the city administration to investigate the alleged misuse of city equipment, materials, and personnel at Youngstown Municipal Airport.

Two 12-year-old Vindicator carriers, riding in their coasters to pick up Sunday papers, are hit by a hit-skip motorist on McGuffey Road. Injured are Frank Anzelino and Frank Allegretts.
