A longtime Valley lawyer who had worked within the Mahoning County Prosector's Office for decades has left his position.

Martin Hume, who has worked as the Assistant Prosecutor totaling more than 24 years, resigned his position, with his last day set for Friday, February 28.

However, Hume told 21 News that the Prosecutor's Office had asked him to leave effective Tuesday.

John Juhasz, Chief of the Mahoning County Criminal Division, confirmed in a written response to 21 News that "Mr. Hume is no longer employed by this office." The email stated Hume was no longer employed as of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

His first stint as Assistant Prosecutor ran from 1997 through 2013, followed by a second time from 2018 through yesterday.

Hume has run his own law practice and was the law director for Youngstown for four years, starting in 2014. Hume also worked as Special Counsel to the Ohio Attorney General for nearly five years beginning in 1990.

Hume told 21 News he resigned to pursue his candidacy for Youngstown City Municipal Judge in the 2025 General Election. Hume also said he would be reopening his private practice.

Hume filed his paperwork and is running unopposed as a Democrat for the Municipal Judge role in the May primary election.

Hume ran for the state Senate 33rd seat last fall and lost to Republican Al Cutrona of Canfield.
