YOUNGSTOWN - Youngstown placed 22nd on a nationwide pest control company’s 2025 list of Top 50 Bed Bug Cities, a drop of two positions from the previous year.

Chicago maintained its position as the city with the most bed bug treatments for the fifth consecutive year, according to Orkin's data released Monday.

Orkin's annual list ranks metropolitan areas based on the number of bed bug treatments performed from May 15, 2024, to May 14, 2025, encompassing both residential and commercial services.

Hartford, Connecticut, showed the most significant change, entering the list at No. 35 after rising 48 spots. Conversely, cities like Charlotte, Philadelphia, and New York recorded decreases in their rankings, suggesting fewer reported bed bug infestations compared to the prior year.

Bed bugs, which are about 3/16 inches long and primarily nocturnal, can be difficult to detect. They feed on blood and can travel easily by clinging to luggage and other personal belongings.

Orkin recommends that travelers inspect hotel rooms by searching for signs of the insects, lifting sheets and cushions, elevating luggage, and examining belongings upon returning home.

Dryer-safe clothing from luggage should be placed in a dryer for 30 to 45 minutes on the highest heat setting after travel.
