YOUNGSTOWN A permit application has been filed by the City of Youngstown, aiming to improve Spring Commons Park and the West Avenue canoe and kayak launches.

The scope of the project was outlined in the application and included several new additions and proposed updates.

New floating docks to be used for canoe and kayak launch points and an improved trail from the existing Spring Commons Park to the existing West Avenue launch are discussed.

Several other improvements are proposed, including:

  • Parking lot improvements
  • Newly constructed picnic areas, concrete walkways and gathering areas
  • At Spring Commons Park, a stamped concrete walkway would be constructed with an overhead trellis present
  • Stone retaining walls
  • A new restroom

The proposed new floating docks would replace the existing docks along the Mahoning River.

A map was included in the permit application, showing the proposed location of the new floating docks in red.

The project is part of the 10 Appalachian Community Grant Program projects that were awarded to communities in Mahoning, Trumbull and Ashtabula Counties.

In addition to the updates and improvements to Spring Commons Park, the B&O Station, located at 530 Mahoning Avenue nearby to the park, will also see some updates.

An interactive map provided by Eastgate Regional Council of Governments shows a renovation project to the station, totaling $3,891,475.

The renovations include the building's roof, windows and exterior masonry.
