AUSTINTOWN — The man injured in an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Sunday night in Austintown is in stable condition, according to his spouse.

A spokesperson for the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) previously told 21 News that the suspect was taken to the hospital in "serious condition." However, the suspect's wife now told 21 News Monday morning his condition is now stable.

The spouse identified the suspect to 21 News as Jacob Hall, a 33-year-old corrections officer for the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center. Hall, who was named the NEOCC's corrections officer of the year in 2023, has a history of mental health struggles, she said.

The suspect's spouse further told 21 News his intention Sunday night was "to harm himself, or have the cops harm him. His intent was not to harm anybody else." She described the incident as a suicide attempt.

When asked about the status of Hall's employment at the NEOCC, a spokesperson for CoreCivic — the company which owns the facility — said in a statement that it is "committed to taking appropriate action once we have complete and accurate information."

"Earlier today, facility leadership at our Northeast Ohio Correctional Center became aware of an incident allegedly involving one of our employees that occurred outside of the workplace," said Ryan Gustin, senior director of public affairs at CoreCivic. "We are working to gather more information about what happened."

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at a home on N. Yorkshire Boulevard, when officers were investigating a subject making suicidal and homicidal threats, according to a news release from Austintown Police Chief Valorie Delmont. One nearby resident told 21 News he heard multiple shots fired.

Austintown Township Trustee Robert Santos confirmed with 21 News that the suspect was the one who was shot. All officers are uninjured.

BCI has taken over the investigation.
