Austintown trustees thank United Way, local businesses for help following Phoenix House explosion
AUSTINTOWN - The Austintown Township Board of Trustees presented letters of commendation to the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, as well as several local businesses, honoring them for their help following the explosion at the Phoenix House apartments in November of 2025.
Letters were presented to the United Way on Monday morning. Other businesses like Wedgewood Pizza, Grizzly Bean Coffee House and Walmart were also delivered letters.
The letters, signed by all three trustees, as well as Police Chief Valerie Delmont, Fire Chief David Schertzer, Township Administrator Mark D'Apolito and Fiscal Officer Laurie Wolfe thank the businesses for their help in the aftermath of the explosion.
"In the face of an unexpected crisis, your business exemplified the true spirit of community. The generosity and compassion you demonstrated by donating time, resources and essential services made a significant difference in the lives of our displaced residents," the letter reads.
The letter goes on to state that the collaboration among businesses, residents and organizations was a great reminder of the strength and resilience that defines Austintown.
"Your contributions - whether is was providing meals, shelter or clothing or other vital assistance - played a crucial role in helping our residents regain a sense of security and hope in the aftermath of such a traumatic event," the letter reads.
The explosion happened at the Phoenix House apartments near North Meridian Road and I-680 on November 22, 2025, and claimed the life of one resident and injured several others.
In the days following, multiple organizations worked to provide essential items and housing to the residents who were displaced as a result of the blast.
