The Cortland City Council met on Tuesday, Feb. 10 to elect Vice President of Council Jim Bradley as the city's new mayor during a special meeting.

Bradley, pictured above on the right, will complete the mayoral term, which ends on December 31, 2027.

In a statement to the city, Bradley said he planned to create a safe work environment for city employees.

"We will not operate under the clear-as-mud system nor will we operate on the 'my way or the highway' mentality," he said.

Bradley adds that he hopes to work with the city council in the future.

"This will be a complete team effort," he said.

The meeting comes after former Mayor Diedre Petrosky was recalled during a special meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 3, after accusations that she bullied city employees, misused city funds, and mismanaged the city.

Petrosky was recalled in a 74 to 24 vote split, with just over 75% of voters electing to recall her. The Trumbull County Board of Elections certified the results Tuesday morning.

Bradley inherits several city projects, such as the Safety Service Complex, a multi-million dollar facility that will house the city's fire and police departments as well as administrative offices.

The new mayor adds that the project requires more planning and will not break ground in Spring as originally projected.

Bradley adds that he is ready to work hard for the community.

"This city matters so much to me and my family; We've raised our kids here, and I just look forward to try to do the best I can do for the people of Cortland," he said.

Bradley's first council meeting as mayor is Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at Cortland City Hall on North High Street.
