Poland School District responds to teacher negotiation status

POLAND, Ohio -

Poland Local Schools' administration is responding after the teachers union released a statement Wednesday on the status of contract negotiations.

In a press release Thursday, the district addressed that there is a disagreement on salaries and benefits.

The superintendent notes the district's difficult financial forecast evidenced in the state's February audit projecting significant deficits.

"Despite the economic realities, the Board has worked hard to provide our teachers with a competitive financial package with a minimal increase in health care contributions, while at the same time, maintaining our stewardship of the public trust and the fiscal integrity of the District," according to the press release.

Superintendent David Janofa said "We're going to do all that we can to be fiscally responsible for our taxpayers, the residents of Poland. We do believe that our teachers deserve something we've had that on the table but right now it just doesn't seem to be enough and some things we can't do because of our financial situation."

Janofa is confident an agreement will be reached.

Meanwhile a sticking point for the Poland Education Association is they say compensation has slipped considerably compared to neighboring districts and health care costs are not increasing for two years.
