A former Youngstown judge is facing Federal charges.

Former Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Maureen Cronin is named in a bill of information charging honest services mail fraud.

The bill charges that while Cronin was in office, she deprived the citizens of her "honest services" by accepting a loan from an executive of a company that had multiple cases before her court and failed to report the money.

No payment schedule or collateral was in place for the loan, in the amount of $18,000, which she is alleged to have accepted in the backseat of the executive's car.

The mail fraud charges stem from financial disclosure forms sent by mail to the Ohio Ethics Commission on which the loan was not reported.

In a news release, U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach said the allegations will be acted upon in a swift manner.

"The citizens of Mahoning county suffer when elected officials violate the public trust. When someone charged with the responsibility of doing justice is alleged to have violated that trust, we will act swiftly to investigate and prosecute those involved and to restore confidence in the judicial system. Today's filing demonstrates our commitment to investigating and prosecuting allegations of corruption in the Mahoning Valley," Dettelbach said.
