HERMITAGE, Pennsylvania- Hermitage commissioners voted four to one Wednesday night to move forward on a proposal to allow a grocery store to sell beer by the glass.

The Hermitage Giant Eagle has requested a liquor license transfer to allow the sales, which would be restricted to the cafe area of the store.

The state board of liquor control will still need to approve the transfer.

Commissioner Duane Piccarrilli said he thinks the move will be a positive economic development for the area.

"From the design they have and the extra precautions they're making with the cameras, you have to purchase food. It's a win-win for everybody. Add more employees, remodel the store, it will bring economic development to the plaza. I think it's a good thing," Piccarrilli said.

If permission is granted, the store will need to renovate in order to comply with state liquor laws, including adding a separate entrance to that area of the store.

An attorney for the store expects sales to begin in about four to six months.
