Boardman police hunt for wounded jewel thief

The owner of a Boardman jewelry store received a disturbing wake-up call just Tuesday night.
The burglar alarm went off at Cirelli Jewelers on Market Street just after 11:00p.m.
The owner lives in a home attached to the jewelry store according to Boardman Police Chief Jack Nichols.
"On the video Mr. Cichanski could see that someone had broken into the shop and was removing jewelry from the showcases. He armed himself and went to the front of the business when the subject came at him," Chief Nichols said.
When the intruder and owner Mark Cichanski, Senior, came face to face, Cichanski tells police he fired off seven to eight rounds from his handgun to protect himself. He says he hit the burglar at least once in the right shoulder. That's when the suspect took off on foot.
"There was a blood trail leading from the store to another business a few doors away and then the trail ended. So that would indicate that he entered a vehicle, and left the scene in a vehicle," Chief Nichols said.
Injured and making a run for it the suspect also dropped a black book bag which contained about $100,000 worth of jewelry, now taken as evidence by police.
Authorities are still on the hunt for the injured suspect. A suspect with a similar method of operation to whomever robbed TeleGold about a month ago.
"We had another jewelry store broken into in the same manner and we're still looking into whether it may still be the same person or a related person to this one," Chief Nichols said.
As detectives work to hunt down the suspect in this case, they've notified area hospitals to be on the lookout for a gunshot victim with a serious shoulder injury.
