COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Demonstrators at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland next week can't have lasers, squirt guns or sledgehammers - but they can have firearms.
That's because Ohio is an open-carry state. People who are legally allowed to carry guns can do so without a permit.
Firearm rules for those headed to the four-day political shindig may depend on their location.
For instance, the Secret Service has banned guns inside the Quicken Loans Arena and the security perimeter that immediately surrounds the main convention site.
The city is charged with policing a large event area outside of that perimeter.
And under state law, protesters licensed to carry firearms are allowed to be in that event zone with a holstered gun. Other laws apply, too. People can't induce panic or disturb the peace.
