BOARDMAN, Ohio - For so many, it's a staple for New Year's Day passing the pork and sauerkraut for a little good luck.

Some say the luck is from the pig itself, which to find food, moves forward, and it's rich in fat, promising prosperity.

At Rulli Brothers, they had to restock the shelves twice with pork.

Mike Rulli says these traditions have been around for decades.

"fROM THE 1900'S TO THE 1950'S, YOU SAW NEW TRADITIONS BEING FORMED FROM EASTERN EUROPE, SO A LOT OF THE PEOPLE IN THE VALLEY ARE FROM HUNGARY, SLOVENIA OR RUSSIA OR GERMANY OR EVEN ITALY WE FORMED NEW TRADITIONS, AND A LOT OF THAT WAS BASED AROUND PORK," said Rulli.

Whether it's pork roast or country ribs, add that to the sauerkraut in a bag, and the traditions continue.

"SO USUALLY YOU GET THE SAUERKRAUT, THE KIELBASA THE PORK ROAST, MAYBE A BEER OR TWO PUT IT IN THAT CROCKPOT AND LET IT SIMMER ALL DAY LONG."

Here's to a new year filled with good food and good luck.
