COLUMBUS, Ohio - The number of new coronavirus cases in Ohio rose to 5,512 on Thursday, up by 364 from the previous day.

The numbers include 337 cases in Mahoning county, with 28 deaths, 132 in Trumbull county, with 8 deaths and 71 in Columbiana county with six deaths.

While Mahoning county still has the most deaths in the state, five more than Cuyahoga county, neither county saw an increase in deaths from the previous day.

The new numbers come a day after Dr. Amy Acton said there are strong signs that social distancing measures are having a strong effect on slowing the spread of the virus, citing a revision to an Ohio State University model for when cases may peak in the state.

Previously, the OSU model had forecasted as many as 10,000 new cases per day at peak, which is estimated for around ten days from now.

That number is now down to as low as 1,600 new cases per day, but Acton stresses that all depends on continuing efforts like banning large gatherings and closing all nonessential businesses.

Acton said on Wednesday that if those efforts are relaxed too quickly, there will be a spike in new infections and that the plan to return to normal life will have to be rolled out slowly, most likely beginning in the business sector in a few weeks.
