WRTA receiving grant to test autonomous electric vehicles

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - WRTA is set to receive a portion of a Federal Transit Administration Accelerating Innovative Mobility (AIM) grant.
The AIM grant is for $2.3 million that will be used to build and test a zero-emission and autonomous electric demonstration vehicle.
WRTA will share the grant with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (SCVTA) in California.
WRTA and the SCVTA will test the autonomous vehicles to provide more efficient services in different areas.
The vehicles are expected to carry 9-15 people and will have a safety operator on board.
The information gathered from the test project will be shared with transit partners across the country in hopes of more being implemented.
The autonomous vehicles are expected to be ready in 2022.
