COLUMBUS, Ohio - Governor Mike DeWine has activated 580 members of the National Guard to be available in Washington, D.C. and Ohio after protests at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday turned violent.

He said the order will take place from the 14th to the 21st of January, which could be expanded.

"People have the right to protest, they do not have the right to be destructive or hurt other people," said DeWine. "The First Amendment does not go on vacation."

He said about 200 of those National Guard members could be headed to the nation's capital ahead of President-Elect Joe Biden's inauguration on Wednesday, January 20.

When reporters asked the governor why he is not completely closing the Capitol and not supplying more than one thousand guardsmen and women like he did back in the summer after the death of George Floyd, he said that decision was made by city mayors.

However, DeWine said he is not done with extra steps that may be needed in the near future.

"We are fully prepared to activate more members of the National Guard," said DeWine.
