AUSTINTOWN TWP., Ohio -  An Austintown Township trustee wants something done about a venue that has fallen into disrepair after serving as a hotspot for family entertainment for nearly fifty years.

Trustee Jim Davis writes on his Facebook page that the township road department has already removed the hanging facade from the vacant Wedgewood Lanes building, saying it was a safety risk.

With taxes behind by 1-1/2 years, owners Carrozino Plaza LLC is nearly $50,000 delinquent, according to Davis. The Mahoning County Auditor’s website lists the delinquency as $38,281.

Constructed in 1970, Carrozino bought the bowling alley from Wedgewood Plaza Inc. in 2010 for $1.2 million.

Saying that trustees have limited powers as to what they can do about the declining property, Davis says the township has been maintaining the grass and parking lot around the building over the past year since the owner abandoned it. Davis says it is not likely the township will not recoup the money spent on maintenance of the grass, weeds, junk, and debris removal.

“I feel very sorry for the abutting homeowners who have to look at weeds and high grass until they get to a height that allows us to declare them a nuisance,” writes Davis. “Each time the township has to do work at this property we are able to assess the property taxes for the time spent abating the nuisance.”

Saying the time has come for the once iconic building to go, Davis says trustees have filed for foreclosure.
