Meijer still coming to Austintown, opening date undetermined

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - While construction continues on the Meijer location in Boardman, construction has yet to begin on the property owned by the company on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown.
Meijer has owned the property at 5800 Mahoning Avenue since 2016 when they purchased it from the Austintown Local School Board for $2.6 million.
Austintown Middle School previously occupied that spot until 2017 when it was torn down.
Meijer representatives say they still do not have a planned construction start date for the Austintown location but have prepped it for construction.
An estimated opening date has not been determined either with representatives saying that the only confirmed openings are those planned for 2021 or under construction for 2022.
"We wouldn't have purchased the property and assumed the site prep costs if we weren't interested in that location," said Frank Guglielmi, Senior Director of Corporate Communications for Meijer.
Austintown Trustees told 21 News in January that Meijer is planning a 195,000 square foot prototype store for the area.
