New Castle man awaits sentencing for shooting into Shenango school van

NEW CASTLE, Pa. - A New Castle man arrested for allegedly firing a shot into a school van carrying seven elementary school students in Lawrence County has pleaded guilty to eight of the 32 charges filed against him.
Byron Benetas, 42, appeared in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and six counts of reckless endangering. Twenty-six other charges were dismissed.
Benetas was arrested after a shot was fired into a van on March 10 of last year on Route 65 near Route 422.
In addition to the driver, seven students were inside the van at the time according to the Shenango Area School Superintendent. No one was injured.
Sentencing for Benetas is scheduled for May 25.
