Low air quality in Mahoning Valley caused by heat and pollution

The Environmental Protective Agency expects is alerting the public local air quality is low in the Mahoning Valley and the EPA expects it will be low through Wednesday.
As of Monday late afternoon, the index stands at 58, which according to the EPA, means anyone sensitive to air pollution should take caution.
Early Monday morning the air quality reached 342, which is considered 'hazardous.'
The air is currently considered 'moderate' which means it can affect people with lung diseases such as asthma or COPD, but could also impact those taking part in outdoor activities.
The EPA said the lower air quality is caused by a combination of factors, including high ozone levels because of the heat mixed with pollution, irritants in the air from fireworks and particles drifting into the area with light winds allowing the particles to accumulate.
Furthermore, southwesterly winds will transport regional pollutants into the Youngstown-Warren region.
Mercy Health Doctor Stephen Predebon advises people who are sensitive especially, to reduce heavy exertion outdoors or the air quality could cause respiratory symptoms.
"If you do have what we call a rescue inhaler, keep that very handy," Predebon said, "If you can take breaks, be sure to do that and you start noticing symptoms you've never had before, let your doctor know."
He said if you're high risk, it's best to stay inside when you can. If you can't stay inside, find the shade, stay hydrated and take it easy outside. If you're are not high risk, it's still a good idea to take caution and keep an eye on children.
"If you're noticing breathing, and not really exerting themselves a lot, that could be a warning," he said, "If you hear any wheezing or increased cough... things like that."
