NEW CASTLE, Pa. - A fishing expedition of sorts resulted in a New Castle neighborhood being evacuated.

Police cars and other emergency vehicles were used to cordon off an area around the 600 block of Lutton Street for several hours Sunday night and early Monday as the bomb squad investigated a report of a hand grenade in someone’s yard.

The grenade was dropped there by a couple of people who say they found it while “magnetic fishing” in the Shenango River off the West Washington Bridge.

Magnetic fishing is the practice of tying magnets to a line and trolling the water to pick up metal objects.

They thought the grenade was a toy until they got it home and someone told them otherwise.

That’s when they dropped it in the yard and called police.

That area of Lutton Street was blocked off until 2 a.m. when a bomb squad arrived to remove the World War 2 vintage grenade.

No injuries were reported
