Cleveland Clinic has shared data looking into the number of breakthrough infections seen at their hospital over the past few months.

The data released shows a majority of hospitalizations due to COVID occurred in those who are unvaccinated.

In September, Cleveland Clinic found that 15% of all new cases they saw were breakthrough infections. A breakthrough infection means the infection occurred in a person who has been fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.

Despite some breakthrough cases, 85% of infections seen at Cleveland Clinic were in unvaccinated individuals.

"While no vaccine is 100% effective and we expect to see some breakthrough cases, the far majority of new cases we are seeing are still occurring in those who are unvaccinated," said Cleveland Clinic official over email.

Data released from August showed 90% of patients admitted to Cleveland Clinic with COVID were unvaccinated. The 10% admitted who were fully vaccinated were generally older than 65, or had significant underlying health conditions.
