The Ohio State Highway Patrol is trying to find out why a car veered head-on into another car in Stark County, killing both drivers, including a Salem High School math teacher.

Troopers say 32-year-old Kera Lemasters-Leskovec of Atwater was driving a Ford Fusion along State Route 183 in Lexington Township just after 6:30 a.m. when it was struck by a Nissan Altima driven by 28-year-old Jonathan Walter of Alliance.

The Patrol says Walter’s Nissan traveled left of center before the collision, before catching fire and becoming engulfed in flames.

In a message on the Salem School website, Superintendent Sean Kirkland expressed condolences, saying that Kera will be missed by her colleagues and students.

According to the superintendent, the teacher’s death came just months after losing her husband, Kevin, to COVID-19.

State Troopers tells 21 News that the couple’s six-month-old baby is being cared for by family members.

Counselors are available in the school guidance office for any student that would like to talk.
