LISBON, Ohio - The man convicted of murdering a Wellsville mom back in October of 2019 was sentenced on Wednesday.

Terrance Haywood, 28, was given a sentence of 21 years to life in prison during a hearing in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.

Haywood was convicted last month on charges of murder, burglary, tampering with evidence, and a weapons violation.

Haywood will serve six additional years in prison for the weapons and tampering convictions.

In addition, the judge added three years to the sentence for using a firearm in the commission of a crime.

Haywood's name will be entered into the Violent Crime Database.

According to his indictment, Haywood broke into Destiny Moody's Wellsville home on the night of October of 2019 and shot and killed her while her children were present in the house. Neither child was harmed.

Moody's stepsister Maria Canon spoke during the sentencing, saying "The defendant took something from her that day that did not belong to him. Her life was stolen (and) her role as a mother to four small children. You stole the joy and pride a mother has watching her children growing up. You stoke an entire future for a young woman and her children"

The judge gave 350 days credit toward Haywood's sentence for the time he has already spent in jail.

On Monday, Haywood asked the court to allow him to appeal his conviction without cost.
