Half of regional ICU patients are COVID positive

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The number of people hospitalized with COVID 19 in the region currently exceeds the number of those hospitalized one year ago. Half of the patients in those hospital’s intensive care units have tested positive for the virus.
According to the Ohio Hospital Association, one in three hospital patients in the 13-county East Central Region has tested positive for Coronavirus. That ratio is even greater when you look at intensive care units where, as of Monday, half of the patients are COVID positive.
The Association’s East Central Region includes 29 non-profit hospitals as well as for-profit hospitals here in the Mahoning Valley, as well as those in counties surrounding the Akron-Canton area.
The most current counts show 1,033 inpatient COVID positive cases, compared to 985 cases on the same date one year before. Inpatient COVID admissions have increased 58% over the past three weeks in the region.
As of Monday, regional ICUs had 235 COVID-positive patients, compared with 985 a year ago. COVID-19 admissions at regional intensive care units have risen 48% in three weeks.

The hospital association collects its data from 245 hospitals and fifteen health systems in the state, including Akron Children’s in Boardman, Mercy Health Youngstown and Boardman, Select Specialty Hospital in Youngstown and Boardman, Vibra Hospital in Boardman, St. Joseph in Warren, Trumbull Regional Medical Center, Salem Regional Medical Center, and East Liverpool City Hospital.
