Ohio - January 6, 2022 marks one year since the deadly insurrection at the Capitol building in Washington D.C., where supporters of former President Donald Trump broke into the Capitol to try and stop the certification of the 2020 Presidential election.

Ohio and Pennsylvania lawmakers have released statements addressing the anniversary.

Republican Representative Mike Kelly from Pennsylvania released a statement addressing the insurrection:

"On this anniversary, I once again condemn the violent actions of those who attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Our Capitol should never be compromised, and those who broke the law should be held accountable. Moving forward, I encourage members of the House January 6th Commission to avoid partisan investigations and instead focus on ways to secure the Capitol so this type of violence does not happen again. I stand with my fellow Americans to defend democracy on this day."

Republican Representative for Ohio's sixth district Bill Johnson also released a statement addressing the violence at the Capitol:

"Like you, a year ago I was shocked and dismayed by the violence at the Capitol; it was a sad day for our republic. Violence and destruction will never be considered acceptable forms of political protest…whether it be at the Capitol, the White House, federal courthouses, or on city streets across America.
I said on January 6, and I continue to say, those who committed acts of violence and destruction in the Capitol that day must be held to account…and that is happening. I thank all the men and women of the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement personnel for their heroic efforts that day, and every day, to serve and protect."

Both Representative Kelly and Johnson voted to over turn the results of the 2020 Presidential election.

Ohio Democratic Congressman Tim Ryan also released a statement released a statement commemorating the events at the Capitol:

"None of us can or should forget the events of January 6th and the attempted ransacking of our representative democracy. As we collectively remember the events of one year ago today, let us first pause to pray for those who lost their lives in the line of duty-not only that day, but the days and weeks following. Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of these patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect members of Congress and defend our nation's Capitol."

Ryan also went on Bertram de Souza's Scribbler podcast to discuss the events of January 6 and the lasting impact it has had with Bertram and his co-host Cynthia Rickert. The full podcast can be listened to here

Ron Cubano, host of Mahoning County Daily Podcast, is hosting a candle light vigil in Canfield on January 6 to commemorate the fallen Capitol police officers who lost their lives during the insurrection.
