Cortland residents may soon live in a "Safety City" as support to develop a learning center to benefit children gained traction on Monday night.
Wollam Chevrolet and Chevy All Stars handed out a $15,000 check to help sponsor the project and a building at Pearl Park in Cortland.
A "Safety City" is an interactive and educational space designed to teach young kids a variety of safety topics and life skills. Some of the programs include traffic and bus safety, along with water and food safety.
Cortland Parks and Recreation hopes to raise a total of $45,000 to introduce children to those topics.
"We're just taking donations," said parks and rec member Cara Detoro. "They can go to the city of Cortland website to get more information. Donations would be going to the Cortland Community foundation and basically we'll try to do what we can as we get it. But ultimately, the best 'Safety City' will be built with those $45,000 that we hope to raise."
The project's organizers hope that they can start start building the facility this spring and have it ready for summer.
