RAVENNA, Ohio - Meet "Littlefoot!"

The Pekin Duck is just one of the many unique cases that has made it's way to Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ravenna.

Littlefoot came to the non-profit in December. At the time, he was a tiny, fragile duckling that was only a few days old. The duck was not injured, but officials said he was showing signs of neurological deficits, which is common in chicks and ducklings that come from large broods.

Because of the neurological issues, Littlefoot was not able to swim or walk. But, his ailments have not held him back.

In addition to adding electrolytes and niacin to his water and starting him on medicated ducking feed, Littlefoot has been gifted a custom wheelchair.

The $286 cost of the wheelchair was covered by donations and given at a discounted price from Walkin' Pet by HandicappedPets.com.

"Not a bad price for mobility," wrote Happy Trails Animal Sanctuary on their Facebook page.

The wheelchair will help Littlefoot learn to walk and become more stable on land. In addition, Littlefoot is now in daily swim lessons, and like humans, organizer say water therapy is good for the little duck to increase leg strength without pressure.

Littlefoot came to Happy Trails from out-of-state and through their 'Owner Relinquish Initiative.'

For 20 years, the non-profit organization has worked with law enforcement and county humane agencies to help rescue abused, neglected or abandoned farm animals. Those cases always centered around criminal charges. But just in the past year or so, Happy Trails has expanded their mission to accept farm animals from owners who simply can no longer care for the animals.

Donor Stewardship Coordinator Lissy Kuhn says the 'Owner Relinquish Initiative' began as they noticed a increased need by families falling on hard times and looking to rehome their farm animals.

Happy Trails says Littlefoot's future is bright. He already has an adoptive home waiting for him and will leave the sanctuary once he is stable, and comfortable and confident in his new wheels!
