The West Point Volunteer Fire Department has began hiring part-time firefighters in addition to volunteer staff on Tuesday.

Fire Chief Wayne Chamberlain tells 21 News the main reason for the addition of part-time staff was to improve response time. He tells us that most volunteers work day jobs, leaving a shortage of members.

Part-time staff will be paid by the hour. Pay will vary based on experience. Basic EMTs start at $13 per hour, Advanced EMTs start at $14 per hour and Paramedics start at $15 per hour.

The money to pay for part-time staff comes from a fire levy proposed in November of 2020. In addition to funding to pay part-time staff, the levy was also proposed to purchase a new ambulance.

Chamberlain thanked supporters of the levy, stating that it is a major step forward for the community.

"The people have been very gracious in several ways and this is certainly a step in the right direction," Chamberlain said.
