If you are driving through downtown Niles, you will notice many 'Hometown Hero' banners are now on display.

This is the second year the city has taken part in the program to honor those who have served, or are currently serving.

Last year the city displayed about 100 banners, this year that number has grown to 130 banners.

"This is a way for us to honor our local heroes, both past and present," said Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz.

Many of the banners are purchased by local families or sponsors, and are often times given to those families after the display is taken down following Veterans Day.

"A lot of people hang them up in their garage or frame them, or display them in their homes after they come down," said Mientkiewicz.

The banners will all be hung by Memorial Day and will be displayed through Veterans Day.
