BOARDMAN, Ohio - The Boardman School Board recognized students and the teachers who took part in at a state conference for storm water districts.

This is the first time ever that students have given a presentation for this professional group.

Jason Loree, a Boardman Township Administrator and ABC Water District Board Member tells 21 News about 1,000 people attended the conference and this is the first time students have ever presented at the professional conference.

The students talked about the Stormwater Park Project and its impact on education.

At the conference, students who have been working with the engineering firm shared how they have taken part in water testing and planning for a stormwater park. That park is intended to reduce flooding.

"We had a student class come from Boardman and they knocked it out of the park. They presented to over 200 people in the room, with standing room only. Every one of them spoke. I could not be more proud to be a Boardman graduate myself," Loree said.

Loree added, "We are doing due diligence to get the site ready. There will be around three months of remediation of asbestos and upgrade to the site, and construction will take place next spring or winter. To see students working with the planning is amazing."

Loree tells 21 News once the storm water park is constructed it will have more than a million gallons of storage which is equivalent to a football field with nine feet of water on top of it.

He adds there is a sanitary line that runs through there. County Commissioners gave the township $1 million to use toward the project. The township is going to reroute that line, and make it solid.

Loree credits teachers for taking the lead to get students involved in the public engagement opportunity offered by the stormwater district.

Ava Acevedo, Lucas Beggs, John Bushling, Tanner Dravecky, Samantha Lenhart, Logan Poulakos, Aafaf Shams, Zachary Slanina and Chase Zelesnak were recognized for their presentations at that conference.
