YOUNGSTOWN - The Youngstown Creative Collection has several events planned to celebrate Juneteenth, a federal holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States, according to The Heritage Foundation

The festivities kick off Saturday, June 11 with the Market Street Corridor Cleanup taking place at the Academy for Urban Scholars from 9 a.m. to noon.

Later that night, Youngstown Flea Founder Derrick McDowell will be the keynote speaker at the Juneteenth Sankofa Ball at the Tyler History Center. This event is sold out.

On June 12, there will be a Sunday service at New Bethel Baptist Church starting at 10:30 a.m.

Then on Monday, June 13, Skills to Heal: A Discussion on Fatherhood will be hosted in Eastern Gateway Community College's Student Services Center. The event will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The discussion will break down fatherhood and what it means to the Black community historically, personally and on an aspirational level.

On Tuesday, June 14, there will be a Family Tree and Genealogy Workshop at McGuffey Centre on Jacobs Road from 5 to 7:30 p.m. 

A Wellness Wednesday panel discussion will be held June 15 at the YWCA from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Health professionals from multiple fields will discuss the history of wellness in the Black community and give insight on and pathways to a healthy lifestyle and practices. Refreshments will be served.

On Thursday, June 16 a Harambee dance performance will be held at the New Bethel Baptist Church starting at 6 p.m. This is an outdoor event and it is requested that attendees bring their own chairs.

On June 17, FAAM Coin: Financial Freedom Friday will take place in the Eastern Gateway Community College Student Services Center from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The event will feature facilitators who will break down ways to become financially empowered.

There will be five sessions on topics like credit and debt management, investment and asset classes, generational wealth building and housing and life insurance.

On June 18, the 6th annual Juneteenth Brunch Summit will be held at 40 North Phelps Street from 12 to 3 p.m. This event requires an RSVP to attend.

To wrap up the festivities, the 2022 Juneteenth Cultural Festival will be held at Arlington Heights at 903 Otis Street from 12 to 7 p.m. on June 19. This event is free to attend and will include vendors, food trucks, face painting, music and performances.
