1997: Valerie Rockenberger and Venus McCrae, twin daughters of Dr. Genevieve and Alfred Wittenauer, graduate from Ohio University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and will begin internships at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital, after which they plan to return to East Palestine and practice family medicine.
Poland Township police and Ohio Department of Liquor Control agents say three of the seven stores and taverns selling alcohol in the township have been caught selling to people under 21 years old.
The annual Lee Wilkoff Memorial junior golf tournament will be held on Aug. 1 at Squaw Creek Country Club.
1982: A Masury teenager, Richard S. Hollenbach, 14, drowns when he slips from a rope swing over the Shenango River and dropped into a small waterfall below the Shenango Valley Water Co.
The Ohio Economic Development Advisory Council approves a $10 million loan guarantee for Hunt Energy Co., a Salem-based company that is reactivating part of Jones & Laughlin's Brier Hill Works.
Area companies and organizations are being asked to "loan" an executive to the Youngstown Area United Way campaign to aid in meeting its goal of $2.4 million.
1972: Youngstown City Council approves $15 million for expansion at the airport and improvements in the water system.
Two motorcyclists collide head-on at dusk at a makeshift race track at Salem. Killed was Dixon E. Van Schoick, 15, who was driving a three-wheel cycle. The driver of the other motorcycle, Peter Walker, 15, was injured.
Mrs. Ann Isroff, a local community leader, is appointed by Gov. John J. Gilligan to the board of trustees of Youngstown State University,.
1947: Mahoning County Engineer Sam Gould says many of the county's bridges need to be rebuilt, from an old covered bridge on Berlin Station-Ellsworth Lake Road to the busy 50-year-old Lowellville Bridge. Repairs will cost millions.
"It is high time colleges and universities teach those who come to them the art of living as well as the way to make a living," Dr. Howard W. Jones, president of Youngstown College says.
Responding to a question submitted by a recent Columbus high school graduate, Sen. John W. Bricker, R-Ohio, says compulsory military service in the United States is highly unlikely during peace time.
