A Smith Township man is in custody after police say he sent sexual messages and performed sex acts on a 15-year-old girl.

Jason Jones, 42, is charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and interference with custody.

According to police, they confronted Jones after receiving a tip from a family member of the victim. That family member told police that Jones and the victim sent explicit messages each other over Snapchat.

Police spoke to Jones at his home, where he initially denied having any relationship with the victim, claiming that she was "just a girl who needed some help."

Jones later told police that he and the victim "were going to start a relationship" and were "going to be together forever." According to the police report, Jones then admitted to having a sexual relationship with the girl.

Once police brought Jones to the station, police say they asked if he wanted to write an apology letter to the victim's family, and he did.

Jones is set to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
