CANFIELD, Ohio - A popular gazebo in Canfield was supposed to be torn down today, so that a new one could go up, but the demolition was delayed.

Anthony Nacarato, a councilman for the city of Canfield, and the committee chair for the Gazebo project says they're just waiting on the green light from the state.

When the original gazebo was built in 1889, at the time, Canfield belonged to Trumbull County, that history ended up being a hiccup in getting a permit to begin tearing down.

This will be the third gazebo sit on the Canfield green since 1889, the original building was torn down in 1954, sharing some of the same issues the current gazebo has which include problems with the roof and structural issues

"We decided to make the new gazebo larger, a little lower to the ground, so it could be accessed for the handicap, and put in a state-of-the-art sound system," said Anthony Nacarato.

A project that's estimated at around $250,000, Anthony says the rotary club in Canfield has raised about half of that, and will continue to collect through fundraisers

"We've gotten commitments through different companies, and a local family has committed to a large sum of money," Nacarato explained.

Anthony tells 21 News that repair costs as well as the cost to replace the structure are about the same.

"The city has done some band-aid patching to try and keep this gazebo up and running...you can see the damage that isn't worth replacing," Anthony added.

Anthony says they hope to have the new gazebo up before the start of the canfield fair.
