Three local hospitals received environmental excellence awards from Practice Greenhealth.

St. Elizabeth Boardman, St. Elizabeth Youngstown and St. Joseph Warren Hospitals were designated as 'Partner of Change' for protecting the environment as well as providing healthcare.

The local hospitals are among 31 total Bon Secours Mercy Health hospitals recognized as either Partner for Change or given the Partner Recognition Award.

"It is a privilege to work with teams across our ministry in Youngstown who are committed to developing a culture of sustainability," said Natalie Terry, Mission director, Mercy Health - Youngstown "The protection of the environment and communities' health are deeply interwoven and receiving these awards serves as a beacon of light for us, it bolsters our sustainability work and shows us how we can continue to grow in our commitment to be mindful stewards of the earth."

The three local hospitals were recognized for celebrating Earth Day in April through reflection, education and action.

The Mercy Health Foundation of Mahoning Valley was also recognized for funding the Glenwood Fresh Market which was located in a food desert.

"In a shifting health care landscape, a focus on sustainability can help build resilience while better protecting the health of patients and the community," said Practice Greenhouse Found Gary Cohen. "Bon Secours Mercy Health and its hospitals demonstrate the kind of leadership, innovation, and performance that can drive the entire health sector toward more environmentally responsible practices."
