1997: Browning Ferris Industries' Carbon Limestone landfill in Poland Township is the largest in the state, but the company wants to expand it.
 
The Youngstown Police Department will destroy 45 handguns, two rifles, and a shotgun that were turned in by residents in exchange for a $50 gift certificate for food donated by Home Savings, a stadium cushion from the public library, and a poncho from WKBN. 
 
Marking five years as president of Youngstown State University, Dr. Leslie Cochran lists as major accomplishments a $22 million fund-raising campaign, an academic scholarship program that attracts 40 top students each year, and stabilization of the budget, which required cutting 100 jobs. 
 
1982: Mahoning County Sheriff James A. Traficant Jr. pleads innocent in Cleveland to charges of "conspiracy to conduct the affairs of an enterprise through a pattern of racketeering activity" and falsifying his 1980 income tax return.  He posts a $5,000 bond and returns to Youngstown. 
 
Until the state board of education rules, the Springfield Local Board of Education is required to transport 60 students to Holy Family School in Poland, Cardinal Mooney High, Youngstown Christian School, and St. Mathias School in Youngstown. 
 
Youngstown firefighter Rocco Russo testifies in the trial of John Glenn that he was at a second-floor window of the downtown fire station when he saw a man shoot and fatally wound Reserve Deputy John Litch during the escape of a county jail inmate who was being transported by Litch.
 
1972: The Youngstown Board of Control sells a 17,433-square foot lot across from the Mahoning County Courthouse for $77,402 to a private corporation. It will be the site of a seven-story office building. 
 
Councilman Jerome McNally sponsors revisions to Youngstown's Charter designed to attract younger candidates to city politics.
 
1947: Two airlines serving Youngstown -- United and Capitol -- have their largest passenger month of 1947 in July, with 2,967 passengers getting on or off airplanes at Youngstown Municipal Airport. 
 
A.I. Kidston, vice president of City Trust and Savings Bank, is named vice president of Dollar Savings and Trust, which bought City Bank.
