A Hubbard man and a Struthers mother have been charged with two counts of child endangerment after the couple's 7-month-old was taken to the hospital with bruises.

Brian Kerby, 21 years old, of Hubbard and Kathleen Schofer, 23 years old, of Struthers, were arrested and charged with endangering children after a family member took the couple's 7-month-old to the hospital Sunday, November 6 after allegedly seeing bruising on the child.

According to the police report, the family member spoke to Struthers police and a social worker at the hospital that the child was allegedly being abused and neglected, based on the bruising and unexplained markings concurrent with potential abuse.

The family member told police about allegations of abuse with another child in the home, Schofer's 4-year-old.

After speaking with the family member, Struthers police went to the Wilson Avenue home of Kerby and Schofer.

According to the police report, the police arrived at the home and spoke with Kerby and Schofer. The parents of the 4-month-old told police that they were unaware of any injuries to the child. Police placed both Schofer and Kerby under arrest.

According to the police, the home was found to be in deplorable condition, and stated "terrible living conditions for any child."

The report stated a child's bed was next to the cat litter, cat food, and piled trash as tall as the refrigerator, and officers reported finding a child's potty chair filled with dried feces and urine. The report also stated what appeared to be mold and mildew growth.

Acquaintances of the couple told police that the 4-year-old would show up to their home allegedly with shoes and filthy, and alleged the child would be at their home for more than an hour before Schofer would come looking for the child.

Both Kerby and Schofer were arrested and transported to Mahoning Co. Jail, held without bond.

Kerby was also charged with arrest while being on probation. Kerby was in court in September, where he pled guilty to disorderly conduct, and was sentenced to 12 months probation with a drug/alcohol/anger management assessment.

The couple was arraigned Monday in Struthers Municipal Court and will have a preliminary hearing in Struthers Municipal Court on December 5 at 9:30 a.m.
