After a quarter of a century on the job, a source has confirmed to 21 News that Mahoning County Prosecutor Paul Gains will announce his retirement from the position at an 11 am press conference on Friday.

Gains, a Democrat, before beginning his position as Mahoning County Prosecutor, served as a Youngstown Police Officer and after completing law school and passing the bar became a defense attorney. Gain has been the county prosecutor for 25 years.

Gains was first elected to office in November of 1996, defeating Mahoning Co. Prosecutor James Philomena.

On Christmas Eve in 1996, Gains was shot in his home by an intruder working for the mob who wanted to keep Gains from taking office.
