WEATHERSFIELD TWP., Ohio - Trumbull County emergency agencies are working on a plan to help keep East Palestine safe as the dangerous situation continues in that community.

Representatives from Trumbull County EMA and local fire departments plan to meet Monday morning to discuss sending manpower and fire equipment to assist in the crisis.

First responders have been working to contain chemicals from exploding rail tankers since Friday night’s derailment.

The job for emergency crews hasn’t abated since officials announced on Sunday that the village is now facing "catastrophic failure" of one of tanker cars that could lead to an explosion.

Authorities late Sunday reported what they described as a "drastic temperature change" in a rail car, causing the potential of a tanker failure with the potential of deadly shrapnel traveling up to a mile, as well as toxic gases.

The Ohio National Guard is being called to assist.

State Troopers and Sheriff's Deputies spent early Sunday going door-to-door evacuating a one-mile area around the crash site on East Taggart Street.

Evacuees have been taken to a shelter set up at the high school.
