1998: The Youngstown State University women's basketball team beat Valparaiso 78-69 to win the Mid-Continent Conference championship and a ticket to the NCAA national tournament. The men's team fell to Valparaiso 67-48 in their conference championship game.

Youngstown Mayor George McKelvey presents a 1998 operating budget of $63.2 million to city council that he projects will produce a $232,125 balance by year's end. 
 
1983: Unemployment in Lawrence County, Pa., climbed to 24.8 percent in January, the sixth-highest rate in Pennsylvania.

1973: The soaring demand for steel worldwide, coupled with the recent devaluation of the dollar, brings a flood of orders to the Youngstown district. Some furloughed workers are already being recalled. 
 
The first of some 200 precast panels are being installed on the 10-story Second National Bank building n Warren. By May 1, the building will have a new facade, and interior renovations will be complete.
