EPA hosting air monitoring and sampling information session in East Palestine Thursday

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - The U.S. EPA has released an updated look at the cleanup efforts in East Palestine following the Norfolk Southern train derailment.
Since the cleanup process began, 33,905 tons of contaminated soil have been shipped from the area along with 13,240,235 gallons of liquid waste.
More than 600 indoor air screenings have been done and 460 private well samples have been collected during that time.
The northern track removal and excavation are underway and are expected to continue over the next few weeks. Trains are currently using the southern track.
Air monitoring continues to be done at all times at 23 stations throughout the community. There have been no detections of vinyl chloride or hydrogen chloride has been found. The EPA's mobile laboratory is conducting perimeter air monitoring while excavation of the northern track is ongoing.
Drinking water testing is being done on a weekly basis and surface water sampling of affected waterways is being conducted daily.
The EPA will hold an information session about air monitoring and sampling with response staff Thursday evening. That event will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Way Station and First United Presbyterian at 109 W. Rebecca Street.
