The Butler Institute of American Art secures Parisian mural after Supreme Court battle

YOUNGSTOWN - After a long and rigorous journey, The Butler Art Institute of American Art is now home to a Parisian mural created by 20th century French painter, Pierre Soulages. The artwork was originally showcased in a Pittsburgh building before the building's owner donated the piece to the museum.
The Butler team spent weeks working 12 hour days to delicately remove the ceramic tiles before bringing it to the Valley. After its removal and reconstruction, the artwork was placed inside the museums Trumbull County branch, but leadership changes resulted in legal battles over ownership of the piece. Ultimately, the Supreme Court of Ohio ruled in favor of the Butler Institute.
"It was quite an adventure, lets put it that way," said Executive Director of The Butler Institute of American Art Louis Zona.
Now, the striking mural sits front and center of the museum on Wick Avenue.
Pierre Soulages died last October at the age of 103, but before his passing he penned a letter of gratitude to the museum. That letter can be seen at the doorstep of the magnificent exhibit.
