At this Norfolk Southern-sponsored Summer Festival Kick-Off at East Palestine Park there were big smiles on a lot of kids faces.

Norfolk Southern's community liaison says it's a way for the company to give back.

"We invited the community. It's free for everyone to come and have a good time. There are a lot of activities. There is a dunk tank where people can dunk the Elementary, Middle School principal, and the fire chief. There's a bubble dance party. ... I heard one boy saying it's the best day of my life." said Norfolk Southern's Community Liasion Jeremy Vranesevich said.

Some parents traveled a distance to this event.

Ashley and her husband Jeff saw the invite on Facebook. They say it's really nice they have tons of inflatables. And that's helpful since her kids have five years between them in age and there was something for each of them.

Some folks here with grandchildren are thankful NS is sponsoring family-friendly community events!

They believe Norfolk Southern is going the distance to make things right.

"As far as doing more, we have a focus group that talks with the leaders and Mr. Shaw they're doing everything they can and I think they're going above and beyond in a lot of ways," Jessica Morelli said.

But some folks I talked with say NS attorneys are trying to deflect responsibility and are seeking to dismiss the class action lawsuits.
Many of the folks who believe this don't attend the events.

They want to see NS actively support common sense rail safety and not use lobbyist to oppose them.

We caught up with Misti Allison a leader of mothers who traveled to our nation's capital to push for changes to rail safety laws.

Allison tells us she and her kids can enjoy events and continue to live life, while still advocating for rail safety measures.

"I think you can appreciate events like this, you can appreciate events like this, the walk we participated in, but you can still want Norfolk Southern to have accountability and ensure there is long-term health care coverage, and monitoring, and home value protection and a sound plan in place for economic development," Misti Allison said.

She tells WFMJ News if you read information about property values some of that states it will take about a year. She believes a year is too long for people to be in limbo if they want to move.

The next NS event will be the 4th of July Celebration in East Palestine's Park.
