Multiple Boards of Elections in the Valley are reporting a strong voter turnout for those registered for early voting in the August 8 special election.

A special election will be held in Ohio on August 8 where voters can cast their votes for or against Issue 1, which if passed would make Ohio's constitution harder to amend requiring a 60% supermajority vote instead of a 50% majority vote.

Early voting began on Tuesday, July 11 and 21 News caught up with Trumbull County Board of Elections Director, Stephanie Penrose who tells us she's impressed with the number of people who showed up for early voting just on day one alone.

Penrose tells 21 News that on Tuesday alone, around 300 people showed up to vote in person and over 700 voted by mail, which Penrose says is an unusually high turnout for a special election.

According to Penrose, the Board is normally lucky to see 100 people come in to vote in one day during a special election.

When asked about the higher turnout, Penrose says she believes the reason for it to be how highly controversial Issue 1 is and the amount of advertising there is both for and against it.

"People just feel strongly one way or the other," Penrose said.

Penrose says she doesn't expect this high turnout to slow down either and predicts voter turnout to stay strong in the coming weeks.

While Penrose was unable to tell us about any party trends with early voters in the county, Columbiana County Board of Elections Director, Bryce Miner revealed that in Columbiana County, both parties appear to be prevalent at the polls.

According to Miner, as of the end of the day on Tuesday, 61 independents, 115 Republicans and 136 Democrats have casted their votes. Miner says 40 people voted in person on Tuesday, which he describes as "pretty good" for the first day.

Looking ahead, Miner says it's hard to predict what will happen, but Miner tells us he's seeing an uptick in absentee and early voting requests, which he considers to be a good sign.

21 News has reached out to Mahoning County Board of Elections Director, Tom McCabe for comment on Mahoning County's voter turnout but we have not heard back as of this writing.
