GROVE CITY, Pa. - Early in the morning on Friday at the Keystone Safari, Dad Levi and mom Blue Jeans ushered yet another newborn calf into the world.

The newborn is Levi and Blue Jeans's third calf, joining two earlier siblings born in 2017 and 2021. Those calves' names are Calvin and Timber.

The calf, a girl, was born around 8am Friday morning after an hour of labor and is rather large at 6 feet 3 inches tall and 164 pounds. Shortly after birth, the giraffe stumbled and fell several times before balancing on its own four hooves.

After a few hours of bonding with her mother and nursing, the newborn calf received her first medical exam by zoo veterinarian Dr. Jonathan Bergmann and accompanying staff, who took bloodwork and administered vitamins to ensure the calf is in good health. Another blood sample will be taken in 24-48 hours, the calf's last sample if she passes with a clean bill of health.

Giraffe births are infrequent, making this a great season for giraffe fans. This calf's birth comes just weeks after a now-famous spotless giraffe was born at a zoo in Tennessee.

According to Keystone Safari, if the calf stays healthy over the weekend, a naming contest will be announced on their social media with a giveaway planned for the person who's name gets chosen.
