1998: Youngstown police arrest Albert W. Baumgartner, 21, on charges he shot and killed his parents, John H. and Judy Baumgartner, and wounded his 19-year-old sister after he was ordered to leave the family home at 3315 Meridian Road. 

A group of 10 Farrell Junior High students presented a petition with 281 signatures asking the Farrell Board of Education to rescind a ban against carrying book bags and backpacks in school. They suggest that if the board is concerned about security, it should install metal detectors. 

The Delta Queen steamboat docks at the Broadway Wharf in East Liverpool. 

1983: Warren City Council agrees to provide $12,000 to pay 16 crossing guards who work near city schools until the end of the year.

Seven hours of negotiations failed to settle the strike by  Lordstown Local School District teachers.   

Dr. Rama Krishnan, professor of management at Youngstown State University, is awarded a Fulbright grant to lecture and do research in southern Africa.

1973: Salem public school enrollment is 4,094, a decrease of three percent from a year earlier and about the same as in 1970.

Mahoning United Presbyterian Church in Mahoning Township, Pa., celebrates its 175th anniversary with an old-fashioned picnic-style homecoming. 

The city of Youngstown won a victory in its fight to prevent the Federal Aviation Administration from shutting down its flight service station at the Youngstown Municipal Airport. 

1948: James Nicodema, 42, of Youngstown, dies, and Mrs. Dan Farrell, 32, is hospitalized after taking what they believed was castor oil but was turpentine due to the mislabeling of the bottle. 

Three Mahoning County judges dismiss a taxpayer's lawsuit challenging the hiring of Youngstown Police Chief Edward Allen. 

The combined Youngstown and Pascarella bands will play the final free concert of the season at Wick Park.
