YSU announces new graduate program for data science, statistics

Youngstown State University's College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and the College of Graduate Studies have launched a brand-new graduate program scheduled to begin in the fall 2024 semester.
The Master of Science in Data Science & Statistics program is built around a curriculum that will enhance students' knowledge and application of data science and statistics including the use of "big data" to help solve problems and provide insight.
Additionally, the program will take advantage of the collaborative relationship between YSU faculty, the YSU Data Mine and those involved with the Purdue University Data Mine.
College of Graduate Studies Dean and Assistant Provost, Salvatore Sanders describes the program as "unique in the utilization of real-world data analysis utilizing the YSU data mine and STEM internship projects."
According to a press release from YSU, after three years worth of growth in the conferral of data analytics certificates at YSU, the need to provide students with an opportunity to engage in practical, real-world projects while learning data analytics became evident.
This need is furthered by external initiatives in the state and region to attract employers from companies like Ultium Cells in Lordstown.
Data analytics will remain at the core of the program with elective options ranging from biological sciences, businesses, computer sciences, economics, geography, mathematics and statistics.
"The program stresses the importance of experimental learning, which is the emphasis of the college of STEM. We are excited about the prospect of adding data science and statistics to our portfolio of graduate degree options for students," said College of STEM Dean and Professor, Wim Steelant.
Applications for the program are open now with the program officially beginning in the fall of 2024. Any questions should be directed towards Tom Wakefield in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at 330-941-3302 or [email protected].
